DESCRIPTION:
APW - Hampden, Special Railway, 23J, 18S, 4oz coin silver OF Dueber recase with spectacular raised rose gold locomotive detail to rear with diamond inset as locomotive headlamp, locomotive is riding atop raised silver and rose gold rails, rose gold and green gold floral detail below locomotive rails, and scene is framed by a rose gold border, cuvette engraved with name and decorative elements, white enamel DS dial with Canadian market 13 to 24 hour indications, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, gilt mvt screws, s#1359152. This watch is highlighted by its absolutely spectacular locomotive case, among the most eye-catching we have had the pleasure to handle. The inner case rear is marked with "Pat. Sept. 20, 1881" which matches to the date of Henry Untermeyer's U.S. design patent 12485 which is for this case design, with the text of the patent document description matching the present watch design perfectly as "design for a watch-case herein shown and described, the same consisting of the representation of a locomotive engine and tender upon a railroad-track, with ornamental plants in the foreground, and surrounded by a ring of dots and an ornamental border."
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent two-tone color, area of fine scratches to main plate between balance wheel and edge passing through "way" of "Railway" marking, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, few small dark spots, balance jewel setting is a brass replacement; dial with faint outer chapter hl at 9:30, tiny edge flake under bezel at setting lever position; fine hands appear to have lost their original finish and been re-colored; case shows very little wear, few fine scratches, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; tight nickel replacement bow with some scratches or small mars, crown shows little wear; thick glass crystal with some scattered small scratches.
